日本を含むアジア圏では四季を24等分した二十四節気をさらに約5日ずつの3つに分けた期間のことを七十二候という。
そのうちの1つである'蟄虫坏戸'の時期である2023年10月2日(月)の日没時刻17:42を挟む17:12から18:12までを大阪の箕面山桜谷休憩所にて録音を行なった。
箕面山桜谷休憩所の外周の手摺4箇所より以下の虫の音(鳴き声)に近いサイン波をポータブルスピーカーで再生した。

北側　2489.02Hz | クツワムシの基音。キリギリス科の唯一の例外で低い(非常に多くの倍音を含む)。

東側　4186.01Hz | スズムシ、エンマコオロギの基音(倍音、3倍音が強い)。

南側　5274.04Hz | マツムシ

西側　8372.02Hz | ヒガシキリギリス

数年前に私は箕面山へハイキングに出掛けた際、山中に位置するコンクリート造の桜谷休憩所に出会した時はその存在感に虚を突かれた思いがした。
現在の桜谷休憩所にたどり着くルートに車両幅の道はない。
最寄りの管理事務所に問い合わせたところ、築年数は不明とのことだったが、目視する範囲でかなり以前に建築されたものだと分かる。
竣工当時は不明だが、現在の桜谷休憩所からの見晴らしは良いとは言い難い。

自然の中に放置されたかのような人工物であるコンクリート造の建物から周辺に生息していると思われる4種類の虫の音を模したサイン波を流すことで建築物に加えて音響面から自然への干渉を試みた。本作はその記録である。

本作は人と自然とのコミュニケーションを意図したものではない。
虫や鳥類の他、箕面山には鹿、猪、天然記念物である猿などが生息していることで知られている。
古びたコンクリート造の建物からから途切れることなく再生された4つのサイン波を建物周辺に生息する生物はどのように受け止めたのか。
自然に対する人工物の干渉が本作の主題である。





On October 2, 2023, during the period of 蟄虫坏戸('蟄虫坏戸 =Insects hole up underground' | one of the 72 micro-seasons in the traditional East Asian lunar calendar), a sound recording was conducted at Sakuradani Rest Area on Minoh Mountain in Osaka, centered around sunset at 5:42 PM, spanning from 5:12 PM to 6:12 PM. At four points around the perimeter of the Sakuradani Rest Area, portable speakers were used to play sine waves approximating the sounds of the following insects.

Northside: 2489.02Hz | The fundamental frequency of Onomarchus uninotatus. It is the only exception among katydids, with a lower pitch [contains a very large number of overtones].

Eastside: 4186.01Hz | The fundamental frequency of Homoeogryllus japonicus and Teleogryllus emma [strong overtones and harmonics].

Southside: 5274.04Hz | The Xenogryllus marmoratus (pine cricket).

Westside: 8372.02Hz | The Eugryllacris japonica.


When I first hiked up Minoh Mountain several years ago, I was struck by the stark presence of the concrete Sakuradani Rest Area, nestled deep within the mountain. The current route to the rest area is not accessible by vehicle. According to the nearest management office, the exact construction date is unknown, but it is clearly a rather old structure. While the view from the current Sakuradani Rest Area is not particularly impressive, the building itself stands as an artificial object seemingly abandoned in nature.

By emitting sine waves mimicking the sounds of four insect species believed to inhabit the area from this aged concrete structure, I attempted to interfere with nature not only architecturally but also acoustically. This work documents that intervention.

This piece is not intended as a form of communication with nature. In addition to insects and birds, Minoh Mountain is known to be home to deer, wild boar, and Japanese macaques. How did the creatures inhabiting the area around the building perceive the uninterrupted playback of four sine waves from the aged concrete structure? The interference of an artificial object with nature is the central theme of this work.
