Label: Inyrdisk - iyd112

Named after Charles Portis's 1985 novel about a secret brotherhood of hilarious failures, Glands of External Secretion's Masters of Atlantis began as a single long track called "You Have No Messages At This Time," intended to serve as a bridge between other songs Barbara Manning and S. Glass were working on at the time with a more or less traditional rock approach. It continued to expand and eventually became so long that it would have to be split into movements, à la some cryptic "Karn Evil 9" cipher. The songs underwent deconstructive surgery and migrated to the Reverse Atheism 2xLP (BUFMS 2011), while "You Have No Messages At This Time," with nothing at either terminus, imploded. All that survives from the original is an excerpt that appears on Chocolate Monk's Fug Gum CD-R compilation. The remainder got hacked into pieces, looped, treated, re-looped, re-treated, and re-arranged into the eleven shorter tracks here, retaining dirty shadows of the old continuity.

Masters of Atlantis -- like Meat Receiving (Ultra Eczema 2009), Tubular Bells (Starlight Furniture Co. 2003), and Icebox (Opax 2005) -- is both an electronic album and a musique concrète album, though not strictly either; it mixes an elaborate, unnerving montage: found sounds and field recordings (rusty hinges, antique calculators, security alarms, spewed liquids, defective mechanical pumps, public address announcements); narcotized sound effects from cartoons and children's records; loop and cut-ups; and a smidgen of electric guitar.
